601: 579 Comparative Bioethics: The New Genetics, 3 credits

This course examines the legal, social, religious and political issues raised by the new genetics.
Substantive issues include such areas as genetic testing, cloning, and stem cell research. The
course is centered on western secular bioethics and law, focusing of course on the United States.
Other legal systems, beliefs, practices are used as contrasts. The principal contrast is drawn
through materials on Jewish law, beliefs and practices, but other systems, both secular and
religious, will be used in the course over the years. This course is separate from other bioethics
courses, and there are no prerequisites. Grades are based on class participation and a take-home
examination.
