This course will address a wide variety of legal issues in the context of tribal, common and federal law. Topics such as sovereignty, tribal membership, land and water rights, hunting and fishing rights, respect for tribal practices and traditional burial grounds, trademark challenges concerning tribal names and images, custody and domestic violence, dispute resolution will be explored. Significant U.S. Supreme Court decisions will be examined in historical and social context as well as the Navajo and other tribal court and common laws. Peacemaking will be studied as well as the underlying cultural context of tribal law.
