601:716. APPELLATE ADVOCACY: JESSUP INTERNATIONAL MOOT COURT I (3)

    Kemeny

2 credits in fall semester; 1 credit in spring semester. W and S based on entire year of work (grades released after the competition ends). This is a full year course.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of LAWR courses or equivalent.
Enrollment limited to 25 students
Exclusion: Students who enroll in this course may not also enroll in Hunter Moot Court which also holds arguments in the Spring.

This course covers two semesters: students enrolling in the course commit to a full-year program and both courses. Students learn basic principles of public international law during the first semester and begin writing the memorials in the fall semester. They complete their memorials and oral arguments during the second semester. The course will meet for two hours each week in the fall semester and one hour each week in the spring.

In the fall, students study the law and write a memorial (a version of a brief) for that competition. In the spring, students will work on oral arguments for the competition. The moot problem, designed for two-person teams, is based on the hypothetical case from the Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition, which is written by experts in the Inter-American human rights legal system and addresses a human rights issue currently in debate. Previous topics have included: State of Emergency; Freedom of Speech; Gender Discrimination & Rape; Freedom of Press; Right to Life; Torture; Fair Trial; Labor Unions; Indigenous Rights; and Terrorism. The final version of the brief forms the basis of the grade.

The spring semester course focuses on oral advocacy using the same competition problem of the fall semester. The spring simulation will be a regular 14-week course with the instructor teaching effective oral advocacy skills and providing feedback to the students. During the spring semester the inter-mural competition will take place.

All students will participate in the full duration of the course. The winning team from the inter- mural competition will compete in the Inter-American Human Rights Competition that is held in May at American University.
