A new tradition for Rutgers-Camden: Marching from the Graduation ceremony site to the reception at the Law School.

Graduation details

The Graduation Ceremony will be Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Susquehanna Bank Center (SBC). 

From the New Jersey Turnpike: Get off at Exit 4 and proceed onto Route 73N. Go 1/2 mile to Rte. 295S. See signs for Ben Franklin Bridge - Route 676. Take Route 676 to Exit 4 Atlantic Avenue or Exit 5A (Mickle Blvd/Martin Luther King Blvd.). Follow signs to Camden Waterfront & the venue.
From the Atlantic City Expressway: Take the exit for I-676 and follow directions westbound.
From the Garden State Parkway: (1) Take GSP to AC Expressway.
(2) Take I-195W and then south on NJ Turnpike to Exit 4.
From Pennsylvania: (1) From points south: I-95N to Philly, follow signs for I-676E and Ben Franklin Bridge/Camden. (2) From points north: I-95S to Philly, use Historic Area exit (2nd & Callowhill Sts). Follow Callowhill to 6th St and see signs for Ben Franklin Bridge/I-676.

Free parking is available in lots directly across from the Susquehanna Bank Center

Seating is unlimited.  Graduates should report to the SBC, in the Ben Franklin lobby, at noon to line up in alphabetical order for procession. Families and friends will gather in the Walt Whitman Lobby. Doors to the seating area will open at noon.

The ceremony is at 1:00 pm.

When you pick up your regalia, make sure you have 4 pieces: a gown with a working zipper that fits you correctly, a tam (not the undergraduate cap), a tassel and a hood.  On graduation day, do not wear the hood.  You will be hooded on stage.  Make sure the hood is unbuttoned, and carry it draped over your left arm.

Please line up on the Ben Franklin Lobby of the Susquehanna Bank center at noon.  Family members and friends will use the Walt Whitman lobby.  Check in and receive your card at the counter by the door to the Center.  Lists of graduates by row will be posted on stanchions.  Line leaders will direct you into the Center at 1:00 pm and will direct you when to stand and go up the steps to receive your diploma.

On stage, after handing the reader the card with your name, proceed to the first available hooder, and after that meet the Dean for your diploma and photograph.

After the graduation ceremony, the Grand Marshall will exit the stage on the audience's left. Graduates should stand at this point. The Dean will follow the grand Marshall, and will stop to meet the first graduate at the bottom of the steps.  The first graduate should march out next to the Dean, followed by rows of graduates who will march side by side next to the faculty members and guests as they exit the stage.  Those   who are able to will march back to the law school (weather permitting), where a light reception will be held at the Clark Commons on the Law Bridge, and the first floor lobbies of the East and West buildings.

Transportation and parking

Before the ceremony

Everyone is encouraged to park at the Camden County Parking deck, next to the law school at 6th and Penn  Streets.  There will be buses in front of the law school to transport graduates, family and friends from 11:00 am to noon.  These buses will shuttle back and forth to Susquehanna Bank Center, 1 Harbor Blvd, Camden, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. There is also parking at the Susquehanna Center.

After the ceremony: 

Those who are unable to march may use the buses to return to campus.  The buses will be at the Susquehanna Bank Center, by the River Line stop, at 2:30 pm, shuttling back and forth to the law school, until 3:30 pm. Those driving back to campus may park in lots 7 on the waterfront (where a shuttle will be available back and forth to campus until 5:00 pm) or Lot 14 on Third Street, from which they can walk to the law school.  Since some Students do remain in the Residence Halls through the summer, do not park in the Residence Lots 12 and 13.

Special accommodations for Graduation Ceremony:

We strive to make sure commencement festivities are accessible to all who wish to attend.  Below are services we make available for guests who may need special accommodations.  Please register guests that need special accommodations with:

Parking & Transport
There are several handicap-designated spaces in the Susquehanna Bank Center lot which are available on a first come-first serve basis.  However, to assist guests with limited mobility Rutgers will provide a tram from the parking lot to the entrance of the Susquehanna Bank Center.  Throughout the parking lot there will be three pick-up points for the tram.  These points will be designated with signs.   The tram will run one hour prior to each ceremony and one hour after each ceremony.

Accessible seating for guests who need a wheelchair or walker or other special accommodations is available at the Susquehanna Bank Center and is clearly marked.  Click here for the Susquehanna Bank Center Stage and Audience Map.  Seats in this special section may be reserved for the guest who needs a wheelchair or walker or other special accommodations plus up to two of that guest's family members (not including children under 5 years of age).

Wheelchair Availability
Rutgers provides a limited number of wheelchairs for each of the commencement ceremonies. These will be used to transport guests with mobility issues to and from general seating.  Unfortunately we will not be able to allow guests to borrow wheelchairs for the duration of the ceremony due to the high number of guests. If you plan on using our wheelchair transport services we would like to know in advance of the ceremony.

Hearing Impairment
Rutgers plans on offering closed caption coverage of each of our four ceremonies.  Screens with closed captioning coverage will be viewable from the 100 and 104 sections.

Awarding of diplomas:

Graduates usually receive their degree from Dean Solomon, but may receive their degree on the stage from family members who are graduates of Rutgers School of Law-Camden. Please send a request to ASAP for permission to have your family member participate in this honor. All requests are reviewed by the Dean. We will need the family member's name, date of graduation, relationship to you, and a telephone number where family member may be reached. Since we try to sit entire party together, please let us know the total number of persons in your party. At the Susquehanna Bank Center, please have your presenters and all your friends and family who are sitting together report to section 103 (see SBC map above). To facilitate the seating arrangements, please have the party come at least 30 minutes before the actual ceremony begins.

Where to report, line up, etc.

Graduates should report to the SBC, in the Ben Franklin lobby, at noon to line up in alphabetical order for procession. Each graduate will receive an index card when checking in, which is to be presented to the Reader on stage, with the name of the graduate, pronunciation, and whether the person received honors or is having the diploma presented by a family member who is a graduate of the law school.   Lists of which graduates are in which row will be posted. Graduates march in after the faculty and stage guests, and sit in the "pit" area. Line leaders will lead graduates to their rows. When they arrive at their seat, graduates will sit down until all graduates are seated.  When each graduate marches on stage, the card should be given to the Reader, who will read the name as the graduate proceeds to hand the hood to the first available Hooder on stage. After hooding, the graduate meets the Dean on stage to receive the diploma, has photos taken, and returns to sit. After the ceremony: the graduates will stand as the Dean leads the faculty and guests off stage.  The faculty marches out of the SBC between Sections 103 and 104 and to the Ben Franklin lobby(see SBC map above). The graduates will march alongside the Dean and Faculty to the Ben Franklin lobby, and then back to the law school.

March to the law school

Faculty, and graduates will march from the Susquehanna Center to campus along the waterfront (weather permitting). All family members and guests are invited to join the march. Those unable to march may use the shuttles provided (see transportation, above).

3:00 pm: Reception

A reception will be held at the Law School, on the Law Bridge and on the Terrace, from the end of the ceremony to 4 pm.

Returning regalia and picking up diplomas:

Regalia will NOT be collected at the Susquehanna Bank Center. Please bring your regalia from 3:00 to 4:00 pm to Room E 108. You will receive a receipt that you may exchange for your diploma Room E 110.

You must have photo id in order to pick up your diploma.  No one may pick up a diploma for anyone else. We know you appreciate the security issues involved in handing out the diplomas for the Juris Doctor Degree.  Bookstore personnel will stop collecting regalia at 4:00 pm, and the registrar’s personnel will stop distributing diplomas shortly after that.  If you are not at the law school by 4:00 pm, you may return your regalia to the bookstore after graduation. You will receive a receipt which can be presented to pick up your diploma from the Registrar’s Office.
