Access - The Library is open to the public.
Food and Drink - No food is permitted in the Library. Students may bring beverages in sealed containers, preferably spill-proof, into the Library.
Borrowing - Borrowing is limited to Rutgers University Students, Faculty, and Staff.
Interlibrary Loan - Interlibrary loan services are available for all Rutgers Students, Faculty, and Staff. Please ask at the reference desk for details and assistance.
Photocopiers, Copy Cards and Change - Photocopiers are located on each floor of the Law Library. Copy Cards can be purchased at the Circulation Desk. There is an initial charge of $.50 for each card. Once purchased, credit can be added to the cards at any of the copy machines in the Library. A change machine can also be found on the 3rd floor near the Circulation Desk.
LENDING POLICIES AND FINES
Circulation of Materials:
Current Rutgers faculty, students and staff with valid University identification may borrow materials from the library. Please note, however, that many materials, such as law reports, journals, multi-volume treatises, loose-leaf services, indexes and reserve materials do not circulate outside of the library. When in doubt, check the inside front or back cover of the book to see if it is stamped as non-circulating, or bring it to the Circulation Desk.
Circulating materials can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
For all students, circulating materials may be checked out for one month. All materials may be renewed unless recalled by another patron.
Please be aware that all materials are subject to recall for use by another researcher. If you need a book that is checked out, you may have it recalled by filling out a request at the Circulation Desk. Only Rutgers students, faculty and staff are eligible for recall privileges. Regardless of its due date, a book will be recalled if no other copies are available within the Rutgers libraries. The borrower who has the book will be notified and will have 7 days from the date of recall to return it. Borrowers who fail to return recalled books by the new due date, indicated on the recall notice, will be fined $5 per day to a maximum of $50, and their borrowing privileges will be suspended immediately. In addition, holds may be placed on the release of transcripts and diplomas until all such fines are paid. Finally, should it become necessary for the library to replace an unreturned book, the student will be charged for the cost of replacement in addition to any fines charged.
You will receive email notification either at your email address on file with the Registrar, or by notice delivered to your mail folder. Students are responsible for the accuracy of e-mail addresses on file, and for checking their e-mail and mail folders regularly. Fines will not be waived for users who fail to to read and respond to library notices, or who do not keep accurate and current e-mail or other contact information on file with the Registrar.
When a recalled book is available, the student requesting the book will be notified either by e-mail, or by a notice in their mail folder.
Students are responsible for the full cost of replacement of lost or damaged books and other circulating material checked out to them. It a book is lost or damaged, the student will be charged a replacement and processing fee of $102.00 per item. Students may contact the Circulation Librarian for the actual replacement and processing cost of any lost or damaged item.
Fines are not charged for overdue books, but students are responsible for returning books by the duedate. A hold will be placed on the borrowing privileges and academic records of any student with overdue materials. Please be aware that in the legal field, it is common for potential employers to require a recent academic transcript. In addition, a hold on your academic record will interfere with providing proof of graduation when applying to the Bar. It is therefore important that all borrowed materials be returned, and that lost materials be paid for.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL):
A book or article that is not in the Library's collection can be obtained through an Interlibrary Loan or through the Electronic Materials Delivery Service.
For materials that are not available at the Law Library, or any Rutgers Library, fill out a request form, available from the law library website. Although most requests can be filled in one to two weeks, certain hard to obtain materials may take longer. Students are advised to make requests as early as possible. Also, you should be aware that some institutions impose charges for certain materials. The Library's policy is to favor non-charging institutions. If charges cannot be avoided, you will be informed beforehand.
Electronic Materials Delivery Service: Books held by another Rutgers University library can be requested through the Rutgers University Library's IRIS system. IRIS, the Rutgers University Library's online catalog, allows registered students to submit requests online. Once you have located a book on the catalog, enter LOAN and follow the online instructions. Law students should direct books to be delivered to the Camden Law Library. Requests submitted through IRIS are usually delivered within three business days. A notice will be placed in your student mail folder when your book arrives. To use this service, you must register and obtain a barcode from the Paul Robeson Library, or another RU library (except the School of Law - Newark).
