Judicial Externship
Practice Externship

Under the direction of Harriet N. Katz, Esq.
Rutgers - Camden offers two extensive externship opportunities for students to earn academic credit while working 12-16 hours each week for various public and private nonprofit agencies and for state and federal judges. In addition to the work, students attend seminars relating to the work done in their placement. You can expect to improve your knowledge of substantive and procedural law, to integrate practical lawyering skills with this greater understanding, and to be introduced to advanced legal skills in writing, strategic decisionmaking and the like. If you have career interests that you want to confirm or for which you want to try out your talents, an externship placement during your senior year in law school will be invaluable.
Practice Externships include a range of civil and criminal positions, in many of which a student can appear in court under the student practice rules of New Jersey or Pennsylvnia. Practice positions are open only to third year students. One or two term placements during the school year, and summer placements are available. Prerequisites: Professional Responsibility, Evidence (for any student taking a placement requiring appearance in court on behalf of a client), and Criminal Procedure: The Adjudication Process or Criminal Procedure: The Investigatory Process (for any student taking a placement in a criminal litigation agency; the advanced criminal procedure course may be taken concurrently with the first term of the criminal litigation extern placement).
Judicial Externship includes US District, Magistrate, Appellate and Bankruptcy Courts, Immigration court, a number of Camden County and other state courts. Judicial placements are available to 2nd term 2Ls and to 3Ls. Students must take Professional Responsibility either prior to or concurrently with enrollment in this externship.
