Extern Application Process

This is a 2-Step process. You must do the online selection and the hard copy application to be considered for the Externship Program. Please read this entire instruction before completing any forms.
Learning about available placements and selecting a placement
- Locate the agency description among the links listed below: Please read the agency's requirements carefully. If you think you should be considered for a placement where you don't appear to meet the requirements, consult with Professor Katz. When completing the online selection of agencies, list up to 3 choices. If you want to select an agency not on the website, please contact Professor Katz.
Judicial | Civil | Criminal
- Click here to select your choices. If you have only one or two choices, you must hit the continue button at the end of the page after you select your first choice and then for the next two choices, you may select - I do not wish to make a second choice and then continue and - I do not wish to make a third choice. This will bring you to the last page to Submit Application. You must go to the end of the form and click on Submit Application, for your selection to be received by Professor Katz.

Preparing and turning in your application materials
- Print and complete the hard copy of the Enrollment Application (click here to get application pdf file). PLEASE PRINT. Please submit Enrollment Applications to Mary Ann Purvenas in room 200 by Monday, April 14, 2008.
- Attach two copies of your resume and one copy of a writing sample, if required by your selected placements, with the completed hard copy Application Form. Please paperclip all materials together, and DO NOT add any folders, envelopes, binding, or staples (writing sample can be stapled).
- Remember to register for Externship in the usual manner during the Registration period. The Enrollment Application is issued by the Director of the Externship Program only to help assign students to placement.
Following through with the process
- You will receive a note from Professor Katz stating your recommended placement at about the same time a letter is sent to the agency with your name, resume, and writing sample. You are required to arrange an interview with the supervising attorney as soon as possible. Ordinarily, this is not a competitive process (the agency is sent only the number of students they request), but your placement is not final until you are approved by the agency. (A few agencies will simply discuss the placement with you by phone and not require a formal interview.)
- Promptly comply with any required background checks, otherwise you may not be able to begin at your placement on time, or, may even be precluded from participating. Background checks or security clearances are required for all U.S. Attorney positions and some other positions, especially law enforcement. You must be a U.S. citizen to work at the U.S. Attorney's Office. Consult the Director for more information if you have particular questions.
