Externship Limits on Enrollment

There is no cap on enrollment, however, students may not get their first choice of placement. (See application process for more information.) We will respect placement requirements establishing qualifications of students and cannot guarantee any particular placement to a student.

For Judicial Externship, no more than six credits may be earned for a particular placement, and no more than 9 credits may be earned for Judicial Externship during a student's law school career.

For Practice Externship, no more than six credits may be earned for a particular placement, and no more than 9 credits may be earned for Practice Externship during a student's law school career.

NOTE: Externship is "noncourse" credit. Under the law school's Academic Rules, a student may not enroll in more than 2 noncourse matters during a term, or count more than 12 noncourse credits toward graduation.

Externship is very demanding. You will get the most from your experience by being available with some flexibility at your placement. We strongly recommend that students consider carefully their entire program of obligations and not commit to multiple activities which are time intensive, both for their own success at each such activity and for the reputation of Rutgers students. Examples of activities currently available that are inconsistent with Externship obligations even if rules otherwise permit, are Marshall-Brennan and Eagleton Fellowships.

Students may not enroll in externship and any of the in-house clinics during the same term.

Students must be in good academic standing to be enrolled in Externship.
