Construction Activity Report 12/15/08

To the Law School Community:

The final phase of the law building expansion/renovation project should be completed before the holiday break begins next week. Occupancy of the spaces on the 3rd Floor of the West Building will proceed according to the following schedule:

1. The new Student Locker Room will be available for use commencing in mid- to late-January. Associate Dean Angela Baker is working with the SBA on a plan for locker assignments. Watch for separate notices on procedures for obtaining a new locker. Students may continue using the basement locker room in the West Building until new assignments are made.

Two vending machines (one cold beverage and one snack) will be installed in the new locker room as well as two microwave ovens. Eventually, some arrangement will be made to place one or two compact refrigerators there for student use. In the interim, the refrigerators in the West basement will remain in place.

2. Two new classrooms (Rooms 323 and 325) will be available for use as of Monday, January 12, 2009. Associate Dean Kim Ferzan is making arrangements for alternate meeting locations during the first week of the semester (January 5-9) for any classes assigned to these two rooms. Check the S09 schedules posted on the website for specific information.

3. The staffs of the three law journals will relocate from the Camden Campus Center to the West Building on Monday, January 12, 2009.

4. VERY IMPORTANT: Furniture for the new classrooms and the law journal suites will be delivered in stages commencing on Monday, January 5, and continuing through Wednesday, January 7. TO ACCOMMODATE THE DELIVERY PROCESS, THE NEW WEST LOBBY ENTRANCE WILL BE CLOSED TO GENERAL TRAFFIC BETWEEN JANUARY 5 AND JANUARY 7. Access to the West Building will be available either by using the Courtyard Entrance (adjacent to the outdoor patio) or by using the East Building lobby and then taking either the Lower or Upper Bridge connections across 5th Street.

5. Construction of the Cafe adjacent to the new Student Locker Room is not the responsibility of the General Contractor. Instead, this project is being coordinated directly by the Rutgers Facilities and Dining Services departments. Work on this space commenced last week and the facility is expected to be ready for use by the middle of the Spring 2009 semester.
