Construction Activity Report 7/23/08
#1 As of this morning, the Lower Level of the Fifth Street Bridge is approved for occupancy. The furniture has been unpacked, cleaned, arranged, and is ready for use. Enjoy!!!
#2 The Mac Adams art glass is scheduled for installation at the interior north facing windows of the Fifth Street Bridge commencing on or about August 1. Scaffolding will be erected on the Lower Bridge as part of the installation process. This work will last approximately two weeks and will require both a change in traffic patterns as well as restricted use of the Lower Bridge. Please heed the directional signage and stay clear of the scaffolding area when this work begins.
#3 At the west end of the Lower Bridge, you will notice a temporary partition. The wall will remain there while construction of the new Student Locker Room and the new Cafe are taking place. The current estimate for completion of the Student Locker Room is early-October. The target date for completion of the Cafe is uncertain at this point, but it should be open for business before the end of the Fall 2008 semester.
#4 Although furniture has been unpacked and arranged in the new Faculty Lounge on the Upper Bridge level, please note that the space
has not yet been approved for occupancy. Until a safety railing is
installed on the rooftop terrace, an occupancy inspection cannot be scheduled. According to the General Contractor, the railing should be delivered and installed later next week. An announcement will be circulated as soon as this space becomes available.
#5 Finally, if you are on the lower levels of the West Building or in the vicinity of the Library Circulation Desk, you will notice a very strong odor. This is resulting from the installation of terrazzo on the 1st floor of the building. Circulation fans are being used to dissipate the odors, but the smell cannot be entirely eliminated. Expect the odors to be noticeable for approximately another two weeks.

Old Faculty Lounge
As part of the construction/renovation plan, the old faculty lounge (Room 625) is being converted this summer for use as a teaching space in Academic Year 2008-09. The furniture has already been removed and relocated elsewhere in the building. A whiteboard has been installed. The lighting will be changed within the next two or three weeks to provide more illumination. The refrigerator and coffee service will shortly be relocated to Room 632 (the Supply Room) and the adjunct professor mail distribution unit will be installed in the hallway outside Room 624. The IT staff is also making arrangements for the provision of A/V services in the room. When complete, the converted space will accommodate class sizes of up to 30 students seated at 8' x 2' seminar tables.
The work being done in Room 625 this summer is an interim measure until funding becomes available for complete renovation of the 6th Floor. At that time, an architectural firm will be engaged and members of the law school community will be invited to participate in the design process.
