Construction Activity Report 8/27/06
During the summer months, our contractor successfully completed nearly all the noisy demolition work in preparation for the
construction of a new street-level atrium entrance on Fifth Street.
For a number of reasons, however, a concrete air shaft located beneath the former Fifth Street entrance plaza could not be demolished before
F06 classes started. That work must be undertaken next week in order to keep on schedule with the excavation of a new basement beneath the planned atrium entrance.
The two pieces of good news are, first, that this is the last of the demolition scheduled for Phase I of the project (Phase I ends in December 2007) and, second, that the work should take no longer than three days. On the other hand, the activity involves demolishing thick concrete walls and thus will require heavy equipment which will
certainly be a distraction. The demolition work is scheduled to
start in the early am (approximately 7:30) and the crews typically finish by mid-afternoon.
