Construction Activity Report 9/8/06
In my last update of two weeks ago, I advised that the building contractor had planned to commence demolition of a concrete air shaft on the former Fifth Street entry plaza sometime during the week of August 28. That activity was expected to be quite noisy, to continue for approximately three days, and to be a distraction for daily activities in the law school.
Some of you may have observed (thankfully) that the anticipated disruption did not occur as announced. At a Construction Progress meeting today, I learned that the demolition activity had to be delayed for a number of reasons, including both the rainy weather and the need to install a protective barrier for equipment located in a basement mechanical room just off the air shaft.
All the prepartory work has now been completed and the contractor fully expects the work crews to begin the air shaft demolition on Monday or Tuesday next week. As I mentioned before, the work should typically begin in the early am (approximately 7:30) and finish by mid-afternoon.
I also want to alert everyone that the University expects to receive Camden City approval next week for the temporary closing of Fifth Street (between Lawrence and Penn) to vehicular traffic and
between Cooper and Penn Streets for general pedestrian traffic.
Appropriate signage will be installed to identify detour routes which should go into effect sometime during the last week in September and remain in force throughout Phase I of the construction project (scheduled for completion in late-December 2007).
