A final reception for the Summer 2013 LSAC DiscoverLaw PLUS Scholars, a diverse group of college students who are interested in law school, will be held in the Faculty Lounge.
Thanks to funding from the Law School Admission Council, 25 diverse college undergraduates from all over the country will be participating in a rigorous residential pre-law program in June. Designed to promote the success of students whose racial and ethnic groups are under-represented in the legal profession, the PLUS Program includes a legal analysis and writing class, frequent networking opportunities with diverse lawyers and judges, and explicit preparation for the law school admissions process. In 2012, Rutgers-Camden received a three-year, $300,000 grant from LSAC to administer the program, one of only four in the nation.

Beyond Roe: Reproductive Justice in a Changing World

Using the 40th Anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade as a point of departure, this conference will bring together scholars, activists, and practitioners to discuss a wide range of issues related to reproductive justice and reproductive oppression. The conference deliberately focuses on justice rather than rights to signal a commitment to discussing the regulation of reproduction, in all the forms that such regulation takes, from a social justice perspective. The conference will explore and study diverse experiences rooted in differences that emerge from race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, age, immigration status, educational level, histories of incarceration and the like. With a broad range of thinkers addressing a multiplicity of issues, the conference will offer an opportunity to look beyond Roe and abortion to explore how to create a world in which reproductive justice is available to all. Byllye Avery, founder of the Black Women's Health Imperative (formerly the National Black Women's Health Project), will deliver the keynote address at the conference.

Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Rutgers Law Journal's State Constitutional Law Issue. Sanford Levinson, author of the book Framed: America's 51 Constitutions and the Crisis of Governance (Oxford, 2012), will offer a public lecture at 4:30 p.m. at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Levinson is the W. St. John Garwood & W. St. John Garwood, Jr., Centennial Chair in Law and Professor of Government at the University of Texas in Austin. His lecture, to be published as the Foreword in the Rutgers Law Journal's 25th Annual Issue on State Constitutional Law, will focus on issues of federal and state constitutional structure rather than judicial interpretation of constitutions.
